One headline this morning from The Hill talks about "Conservative media" and its coverage of the conflict inside the Republican Party about its agenda. A statement caught my attention that says "conservative media has always been held to a higher standard than liberal media." First, that is baloney. Second, that is not newsworthy. Such is a distraction from the real story.
Instead, the news is about the Republican Party Platform and Trump Presidential Manifesto and how they are misaligned internally. Second, both are misaligned with the needs of the majority of American citizens.
Analysis
The Republican Party is divided among factions. President Trump was astonished by the degree of factionalism and disharmony inside "his" party. Do you remember when Trump was vacillating about whether or not align with Republicans? He wondered if they wanted him or not? Party members wondered about him too.
The trouble begins when a political party, be it Republicans or Democrats put off their Party Platform development until late in the election cycle. There is little time or resource to permit robust participation by candidates in the process. Citizens have a small window in which to obtain a copy and to review its contents before it is off to the races.
A party platform is a core foundation document from which presidential candidates develop explicit manifestos that describe details from which to produce actionable policy and legislation. When this essential activity is left to the end of the cycle, then it is underdeveloped and not well vetted as is in the case of Donald Trump.
The entire presidential vetting and campaigning process requires more time and should begin earlier with the development and publication of the Party Platform followed by the Presidential Manifesto that is a detailed description of what a candidate proposed to accomplish in two four-years terms of office.
Recommendation
Political Parties need to reconsider the cycle and timing in developing Platforms and Manifestos as well as standards for their content as I am publishing a new book about the subject.
