The Trump Difference

'Nobody Special' suggests rhetorically that Donald Trump has made a difference in America.

Without a doubt, he has made a categorical difference. Let's have an audit.

Bear in mind this lawful standard:

Making false statements (18 U.S.C. § 1001) is the common name for the United States federal process crime laid out in Section 1001 of Title 18 of the United States Code, which generally prohibits knowingly and willfully making false or fraudulent statements, or concealing information, in "any matter within the jurisdiction" of the federal government of the United States, even by merely denying guilt when asked by a federal agent.

The Washington Post and other media fact checkers report that the president has told 13,435 lies while in office, according to Washington Post fact checkers as of October 25, 2019. That in itself on a single count is breaking the law and an impeachable offense. Trump is a confirmed liar.

If you ask the Trump White House for a list, here is what you get:

  • "Almost 4 million jobs created since the election.
  • More Americans are now employed than ever recorded before in our history.

  • Net exports are on track to increase by $59 billion this year.
  • Improved vetting and screening for refugees, and switched focus to overseas resettlement.
  • We have begun BUILDING THE WALL. Republicans want STRONG BORDERS and NO CRIME. Democrats want OPEN BORDERS which equals MASSIVE CRIME."

The first claim is false:

"GDP Growth Was Higher on Average under Obama in 2014 and 2015 Than Compared to Trump in 2017 and 2018"

The second claim is false:

There are more Americans today than ever and therefore more are in the workforce, but that has nothing to do with Trump. Obama could have made the same claim, but didn't.

You march down the list, and most of the Trump claims are lies and distortions.

True it is that he has eliminated a number of regulations that were passed into law by Congress to protect Americans in a variety of ways. Those protections, including environmental, protecting clean air and water have been eliminated.

True it is that Trump and his go-along members of Congress have driven the US Debt and deficit up to unsustainable levels. The economy is on the brink of collapse just as it was under George W. Bush.

True it is that he has assaulted the democratic republic with tyranny and being complicit with our enemies. That is being demonstrated through impeachment and will continue under the rule of law for as long as he shall live.

Impeach Trump and hold him accountable

President Donald Trump consistently abuses the rule of law and ignores or challenges statutes and regulations without merit. Trump's actions happen while he has been under counsel by both personal attorneys and by the US Attorney General.

Ultimately, as with all citizens, ignorance of the law is without excuse. He can't blame his legal advisors for his illegal actions, including obstruction of justice.

Some of his lawyers may have been complicit in his acts of crime. Some members of Congress in the House and Senate have actively contributed to his crimes and are complicit.

Sorting out the associated crimes will take some time. One thing is clear and specific. President Trump must be accountable for his abuse of power and dereliction of his oath of office.

One and done.

Situation Report: Peril

Some say Donald Trump's order to withdraw troops from Syria, effectively abandoning our Kurd allies, is impulsive. The fact is that he wanted to do this for over a year.

The cost of troop deployments in the Middle East and the protracted wars is immensely costly, creating a considerable strain on the nation's finances.  Since he and his Republicans have created a revenue shortfall by lowering taxes on corporations and the wealthy while driving up expenses, he now wants to cut military deployments.

Trump believes that he can pressure nations with economic sanctions as a substitute for boots-on-the-ground. US foreign policy and the State Department indeed drive 43% of the Defense budget.

The trouble is that Trump fails to engage the CIA, State Department, and Defense professionals to assess his desires and policies. His simplistic approach ala the real estate model doesn't fit the situation. His plans are flawed, and his actions are incomplete, untimely, and too risky.

Face it; the Trump administration is on shaky ground. It is under duress and is facing impeachment. Now, it is not the time for Trump to make decisions of paramount importance because his mistakes have lasting and damaging consequences.

If the Republican Party and its elected representatives were responsible, they would rein him in. Mitch McConnell and the Senate tried to do that, except the horse got out of the barn. They forfeited their control, and the nation is stuck in a dangerous state.

Republicans: Reckoning Past the Wreck

By James A. George, Author and Independent Journalist

Reading The Washington Post this Sunday and the article titled: ‘Out on a limb’: Inside the Republican reckoning over Trump’s possible impeachment, By Robert Costa and Philip Rucker prompted my response. They say that the Trump White House is in a bunker while
a torrent of impeachment developments has triggered a reckoning in the Republican Party, paralyzing many of its office holders as they weigh their political futures, legacies and, ultimately, their allegiance to a president who has held them captive.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/out-on-a-limb-inside-the-republican-reckoning-over-trumps-possible-impeachment/2019/10/05/8e2b73c0-e6ef-11e9-b403-f738899982d2_story.html?wpisrc=al_trending_now__alert-politics--alert-national&wpmk=1

A friend and former boss of mine is a Trump and Republican defender. He believes that the liberal boogeymen and women who in his mind are the “Washington establishment” have conspired all along against Republicans and Trump as they want to transform America into a liberal socialist democracy. “Liberal and socialist” are scary words to “conservatives and capitalists.” The “Trumpians” tout individualism and independence, claiming that the “boogeymen” are out to deprive every one of their freedom, including the right to believe evangelistically against science, and a women’s rights to choose, and LGBT’s and other godless groups.

What it’s truly about is the strategy by oligarchs and wealthy persons to defend their wealth and power from citizens who actually believe in democratic equality and freedom, which they don’t. There are too few of them to win elections fairly, and their approach is to exploit bigotry, fear, and ignorance to their advantage. Under Trump, they have succeeded with help from foreign enemies.

The American Political System is broken and under duress. As George Washington saw from the outset, political parties are problematic.

Washington warns the people that political factions may seek to obstruct the execution of the laws created by the government, or to prevent the branches of government from enacting the powers provided them by the constitution.
the spirit of party
serves always to distract the public councils and enfeeble the public administration. It agitates the community with ill-founded jealousies and false alarms, kindles the animosity of one part against another, foments occasionally riot and insurrection.’”

My position is that there is value in political parties in America if there are common standards governing them that hold them accountable for the candidates that bear their brand. In my books on the subject referenced as a footnote:

1.     Political parties as nonprofit corporations must bear responsibility for their actions and candidates who bear their brand.
2.     That begins with vetting candidates for office, their resumes, credentials, and claims.
3.     Political parties publish platforms that express their brand of governance and values over the long run.
4.     Candidates publish manifestos that explain their alignment with party platforms and implementation plans for two four-year terms of office.
5.     To assist citizens, there must be common standards governing the development of elected officials resumes and job descriptions (that I call job models).
6.     The US Constitution needs auditing and amending in light of omissions in the law that undermine its intent, such as ending Citizens United and unlimited influence by corporations and lobbyists.
7.     Most important, the US Constitution must emphatically embrace the Universal Declaration of Human Rights without equivocation or compromise.

The process of impeaching Donald Trump for his most recent breaches of his oath of office is only the beginning of his prosecution and all those who are complicit in his abuse of power. It is not enough to elect incumbents out of office. Some leaders and officials bear gross responsibility for the attack on our democratic republic.
