China, Russia, and America

China, Russia, and America are at war between authoritarian communists and a free-world democracy backed by allies. If authoritarian communists dropped "authoritarianism" and pursued their socialist model, respecting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, then the enemies could coexist.

During my early years in boyhood, all the talk was about the Korean Conflict, Americans combatting communists in North Korea, and trying to hold the line of freedom for South Koreans. The enemy was communist authoritarianism, and the Korean conflict became a proxy war between the U.S. and China in the Korean Peninsula. At one point, I recall my grandfather saying he thought a nuclear war would happen. The Korean War didn't end, and by the time I was a teen in high school, the Vietnam War was underway.

Vietnam was another proxy war between the U.S. and China. Fear was that the Chinese Communist would steamroll the sovereign nations in South Asia.

Studying political science in my first year of college, I understood the domino theory, except several books enlightened and enriched my understanding with lasting effect.

China on the Eve of Communist Takeover,  January 1, 1966

by Barnett A. Doak (Author)

I read the Doak book while on Active Training Duty at Fort Dix, New Jersey, where I learned how to be an infantry soldier. The story follows a journalist covering the collapse of the Chinese Nationalists under Chiang Kai-shek. The Nationalists sought to retain control of the cities, while the communists under Mao Zedong strategically sought the power of the farmers, knowing the cities could not survive without food. The communists strangled the towns. The Nationalists fled to Taiwan, and there they are today, still being pursued by the communists.

"In 1945, the leaders of the Nationalist and Communist parties, Chiang Kai-shek and Mao Zedong, met for a series of talks on forming a post-war government. Both agreed on the importance of democracy, a unified military, and equality for all Chinese political parties."

The Ugly American

The Ugly American is a 1958 political novel by Eugene Burdick and William Lederer that depicts the failures of the U.S. diplomatic corps in Southeast Asia.

The book caused a sensation in diplomatic circles and had major political implications. The Peace Corps was established during the Kennedy administration partly as a result of the book.

Lederer was a US Naval Academy graduate in 1936. His first appointment was as the junior officer of a river gunboat on the Yangtze River.

His best-selling work, 1958's The Ugly American, was one of several novels co-written with Eugene Burdick. Disillusioned with the style and substance of America's diplomatic efforts in Southeast Asia, Lederer and Burdick openly sought to demonstrate their belief that American officials and civilians could make a substantial difference in Southeast Asian politics if they were willing to learn local languages, follow local customs and employ regional military tactics. However, if American policymakers ignored the logic behind these lessons, Southeast Asia would fall under Soviet or Chinese Communist influence."

Street Without Joy, Bernard Fall

"Street without Joy is a 1961 book about the First Indochina War (1946–1954); it was revised in 1964. The author Bernard B. Fall was a French-American professor and journalist. He had been on-site as a French soldier and then as an American war correspondent. The book gives a first-hand look at the French engagement, with an insider understanding of Vietnamese events, and provides insights into guerrilla warfare. It drew wide interest among Americans in the mid-1960s, when their own country markedly increased its activity in the Vietnam War."

"And therein lay a problem, Fall concluded, for the support of that local populace was absolutely vital. 'In revolutionary war,' he wrote, 'the allegiance of the civilian population becomes one of the most vital objectives of the whole struggle. This is indeed the key message that Trinquier' (the French military theorist) 'seeks to impress upon his reader: Military tactics and hardware are all well and good, but they are quite useless if one has lost the confidence of the population among whom one is fighting.'"

What is Wrong with this Picture?

More Americans were killed last year from gun violence than Russians killed Ukraine citizens.

A new release of provisional data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests that guns killed nearly 49,000 people in 2021.

Dear Republicans,

 Dear Republicans,

I am writing to ask why you are pursuing actions that are causing the stock market and my investment portfolio to lose lots of value while you are also trying to cut my Social Security and Medicare Benefits, both of which I earned?

Do you not understand that people like me can't afford your irresponsible behavior?

We agree, "The most dangerous domestic problem facing America's federal government is the rapid growth of its budget deficit and national debt." (Economist Martin Feldstein warns about excessive government debt in the Wall Street Journal)

The government either has to impose higher taxes or reduce future spending to avoid economic distress.

Raising taxes on the middle class and poor slows economic growth, which is too unfair, especially when the tax rate and rules favor the wealthy and corporations to an extreme. You, Republicans, disagree and resist taxing the rich at a higher rate.

Slowing the rate of government spending is prudent and necessary.

Spending Categories

19 % Social Security

15 % Health

14 % Income Security

12 % National Defense.

12 % Medicare

11 % Education, Training, Employment, and Social Services.

8 % Net Interest

4 % Veterans Benefits and Services

Only one of the above categories can be reduced by a limited amount: National Defense.

Raising taxes on the rich is part of the answer.

There is another target, and that is Homeland Security. It is a new invention I helped address when I authored The Management Approach to Securing America. I proposed a radically different course than what the administration under Tom Ridge decided. My approach would have produced results at one-third the size and cost. Homeland Security is bloated.

"How much does the federal government spend on homeland security?

Each year federal agencies receive funding from Congress, known as budgetary resources. Agencies spend available budgetary resources by making financial promises called obligations. In FY 2023, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had $97.00 Billion distributed among its 17 sub-components.

I would cut that by two-thirds, saving $31 billion in annual expenses.

Sincerely,

James A. George

PS: I will donate my time to an initiative to save us money.

Reset the Republican Congress

The Republican House of Representatives, under the leadership of Kevin McCarthy, has made a complete mockery of the government. Republicans failed to vet candidates. They follow a corrupt ideology, and their chosen path is an insurrection, lying, and fraud.

Americans should not have to wait two years to address the problem.

Actions needed at once:

  1. Wage a universal protest by Americans to demand a fix in Congress
  2. Oust those who have broken the law
  3. Democrats recruit and cajole a possie of salvageable Republicans to join the cause to reset Congress

Resist and reset the Republican Congress, now.

My Take on the Bidens' Scandals

"Senate panel investigating Hunter Biden's failure to register as a foreign agent

Paul Sperry / RealClearInvestigations

Oct 28, 2020

A search of Justice Department databases reveals that Hunter Biden failed to register as a foreign agent while promoting the interests of foreign business partners in Washington, including brokering meetings with his father and other government officials. Realclear Investigations has learned that at least one Senate committee is investigating whether Joe Biden's son violated federal laws requiring disclosing such foreign contacts.

Paul Manafort ended up in prison partly for failing to publicly disclose his lobbying on behalf of Ukrainian clients and partners. Compared with the treatment of Hunter Biden, that's "a double standard, 100%," said a former assistant FBI director."

Even before Biden became President, my theory has been that he and his son partnered to leverage Joe Biden's knowledge and relationships with foreign governments to advance their business interests that need to be more transparent.

As the Biden documents scandal unfolds, I will not be surprised to discover the plausibility that the two Bidens used the secret documents to advance their interests which is the motive for their being stored in the garage and elsewhere.

Joe Biden is vulnerable to impeachment, should the story develop with facts at a sufficient speed. Given the pace of justice in the Trump case, refrain from banking on it.

However, Democratic leadership should counsel President Biden not to seek a second term.

Recall -- impossible

Removal is generally initiated by an elected body or official, such as the Legislature or the Governor. A recall is the exception and may be initiated by the voting public to remove any elected official.

RECALL OF MEMBERS OF CONGRESS

By: Mary M. Janicki, Principal Analyst

You want to know whether voters in a state can recall a member of the United States Congress.

No, they cannot. Any attempt by a state to recall a member of Congress is prohibited by the Federal Constitution. A vacancy in the office of U.S. senator or representative can be created only by the incumbent's death or resignation, the expiration of his term, or some direct action of the body (the Senate or the House of Representatives) which is empowered to expel members (Burton v. U.S. 202 US 344, at 369). There is no constitutional authority to hold a special election that would be required to fill a seat in the event a member was recalled. Article I, section 4 of the Federal Constitution, relating to the time for holding a regular election, and Article XVII of the Amendments on holding a special election only when a vacancy exists combine to preclude an election to replace a member of Congress who had been recalled. Federal constitutional provisions supersede any state recall procedures for these offices.

The details of the argument are included in the attached Brief on the Constitutionality of the Recall of United States Senators and Representatives In Congress, prepared by Hon. Walter F. George, Chairman of the Committee on Privileges and Elections, United States Senate, on May 18, 1935.

As to removal by the recall, the United States Constitution does not provide for nor authorize the recall of United States officers such as Senators, Representatives, or the President or Vice President, and thus no Member of Congress has ever been recalled in the history of the United States.

Are There Leaders Among You?

Republicans today have stymied the U.S. Government by posing a leadership crisis. Two years ago, I wrote a book, A President's Manifesto. It explained the necessity for Political Parties to publish their platforms and for party members to declare their intentions to support the platform in individual manifestos tailored to their Districts and States. A President or presidential candidate initiates the process.

Today, the U.S. House of Representatives is deficient and derelict in its duty to produce a platform for all Americans to read and understand.

The party that has yet to elect Kevin McCarthy as its leader and has no other replacement candidate continues to fail its oath of office. They cannot even seat themselves.

Since the men-folk are failing, what about all you Republican women? Are there no leaders among you?

Is the Free-world Media Penetrating Russia

An MSNBC commentator observes that the Russian population is dumbed down because intellectuals and well-to-do have fled the nation. Putin lords over submissive folk fed propaganda, and deprived of free thinking.

That seems to parallel circumstances in Germany which led to Hitler's success at convincing his citizens to declare war on everyone around Germany. Putin never accepted the demise of the former USSR and wants to build back, one nation at a time, starting with the closes neighbor, Ukraine.

How can the Russian population be reached to hear alternative views?

Why can't the Voice of America penetrate Russian airwaves?

An archived article from the Washington Post from 2013"

"Although Congress finances Radio Liberty and other U.S. international broadcasters, such as Voice of America and Radio Farda (which is aimed at Iran), it is run by the Broadcasting Board of Governors — four Republicans and four Democrats appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate to prevent congressional interference. The board has launched a review of the operations in Russia. Some board members plan to visit here early this year, and they say they have not abandoned hope of the radio station returning to the air."

Does BBC World Service reach Russia?

FAQ | World Service. Short-wave frequencies cover Belarus, Moldova, Ukraine, Russia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and western Kazakhstan. In the Moscow and St Petersburg areas, local frequency 1260 kHz carries BBC World Service in English when it is not carrying BBC Russian, as does 675 kHz in Ekaterinburg.

Is Radio Free Europe broadcasting to Russia?

Whereas Radio Free Europe broadcast to Soviet satellite countries, Radio Liberty broadcast to the Soviet Union.

What media is blocked in Russia?

In March 2022, amid its invasion of Ukraine, Russia began to increasingly block international news outlets such as BBC News Russian, Deutsche Welle, and RFE/RL (including Current Time), and Twitter was "restricted".

Do Russian people have access to the Internet?

As of 2020, 122,488,468 (85% of the country's total population) were Internet users. As of September 2020, Russia ranked 47th among the world's countries by the fixed broadband Internet access speed, with an average download speed of 75.91 mbit/s, and 88th by the mobile network Internet access speed with 22.83 mbit/s.

The BBC has elected to resurrect shortwave radio broadcasts after its own websites were blocked in Russia. Millions of Russian citizens have turned their trust toward BBC since the beginning of the country’s most recent conflict with Ukraine. BBC web pages written in English received 252 percent more Russian traffic during the last week of February than is typical for the site, according to the organization itself. A Russian language page with live reporting on the conflict racked up 5.3 million views in the same timeframe, making it the most visited web page across all of the BBC World Service’s non-English language services.
