Abortion

Birth control and abortion have been relevant and essential topics throughout my adulthood. The subjects began in high school health class, where abstinence was the first word, followed by sex with protection using prophylactics, aka rubbers.

Girls didn't want to become pregnant out of wedlock, and boys didn't want to make mistakes by accidentally causing pregnancy, and making love involved petting that stopped short of an act of sex if consenting teens and adults could help it.

Making love is passionate and conflicts with a necessity for self-discipline. Enter religions and their leaders, preaching from the Bible.

"What is written about sex before marriage in the Bible comes predominantly from the book of 1 Corinthians, written by Paul. 1 Corinthians 6:18-20 says,"  '1 Corinthians 6:18-20 says "Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body's a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body."

Was Paul speaking to the man or woman, or both?

People are human, and when men and women are ripe for love, consenting partners must make decisions no matter their age.

Modern medicine and technology make it possible for lovers to have safer sex with greater freedom. Like everything, individuals must choose how they will prevent pregnancy until they have decided they are ready to assume the responsibility for childbirth.

Creating a child from the act of love is a special event. When it happens, the consenting parties, husband and wife or partners, must have the financial resources and means to sustain themselves and every child born unto them with a good prospect for doing so throughout a child's life. That is a huge responsibility.

Now, a woman can decide to have sex with protection such as birth control pills and physical devices. Men must respect women and their rights to choose their course as only women can bear children. Men must address the prospect that their sexual actions have serious consequences and responsibility.

The reality is that in America today, a large percentage of the population is ill-prepared to assume the burden of parenthood.

Many are too ignorant or deficiently disciplined to control their behavior. Aggressive males overwhelm women by force and abuse to create unwanted pregnancies in many instances.

What is society's responsibility to provide oversight and regulation governing this domain of human behavior? The consequences of unwanted pregnancy become society's burden: the care and safety of children throughout their childhood, including the care and protection of mothers with and without fathers.

The matter of aborting an unwanted pregnancy requires a legislative address that is governed by good medicine and science.

Today, America is backsliding against good governance, including the application of science and technology.

The foundation of our Democratic Republic is undermined by ignorance. The abortion issue underscores the failure of America to attend to society's needs with mature responsibility. Ideological deficiencies undermine our institutions. Unfortunately, most Americans don't get it.
